Rapes are common in India, a country with one of the highest rates of sexual violence in the world. When a 23 years old student was brutally gang-raped in Delhi, on a bus in December 2012,

violence against women in India became international news.

This terrible condition pushed the Bombay-based Viira Cabs and the Delhi-based Azad Fondation to start training for young women to become taxi drivers, providing safe and alternative

transportation for women traveling alone. Also aims the empowerment of women to support

themselves and their families economically.

“By a girl, by a young woman, or even by an aged one, nothing must be done independently, even in her own house. In childhood a female must be subject to her father, in youth to her husband, when her lord is dead to her sons; a woman must never be independent”.
