Caste system
India’s caste system is among the world’s oldest
forms of surviving social stratification. It is based on the social grouping called Jati and the theorical
Varna. Varna literally means color, appears in Hindu texts dating back to 1000 BCE and divided the society into four classes: Brahmins (priestly people), the
Kshatriyas (warriors), the Vaishyas (artisans, merchants, farmers), and Shudras (labouring classes).
Tribal people and untouchables are outside of the varna system.
This project is an anthropological journey into the caste system to document the contrasts of the indian society and the continuous discimination against the scheduled castes.
